Drawing is fundamental to all mediums of painting, and is a finished medium all on its own. Take a good look at the silverpoint (silver wire used for drawing before pencils were invented), the detailed conté 'chalk' drawings of DaVinci's and others, the atelier methods of drawing from cast models and you understand how complete drawing can be.
On the other side of things, drawings for paintings can be much looser, but still requiring the knowledge of perspective and shapes.
We all start drawing as children, and if we were lucky we were given blank paper instead of coloring books. Then, slowly, the 3 R's (reading, 'riting, 'rithmetic) filled our little brains and art mostly disappeared as a vital part of our education. Perhaps not as much in Europe or in US Charter schools, but certainly in the 50's and 60's children.
So, pick a class and join the fun. Simple materials required, no fuss or muss of cleanup, no chemicals, and easily packed into a bag you can carry and practice wherever you are. |
